SAND Family Meeting (pdf)

WELCOME S.A.N.D. Family!

Thanks for visiting the S.A.N.D. School website! This is just one of the many initiatives we are undertaking to build community inside and outside our school. We are looking forward to an exciting school year. We will work together to ensure the very best for our students, and we will expand our parent engagement through all media. Throughout the summer, the administrative team and the curriculum specialist worked carefully to redesign our strategic learning environment. It is a positive framework which is student-centered, teacher-motivated, parent-involved, and community-friendly.

Our theme for the 2016-2017 school year will be: SAND School...Building Community: creating a sense of unity with students, teachers, and families.

As your school leader, I am extremely excited to get to know each of you in a professional and personal manner. We will build positive relationships that will last for years to come. One of our high priority goals is to make S.A.N.D. School into one of thehighest performing schools in the district. As a unified team, we will make a positive change. Our “Building Community: creating a sense of unity with students, teachers, and families theme creates a framework, blueprint and trajectory for these changes, and facilitates our students’ and families’ growth, both academically and socially.

I’m looking forward to an exciting school year, alongside you and OUR children!

SOARing Together!
Mr. Heredia
Principal

Creciendo Juntos,

Mr. Heredia

Director, Escuela S.A.N.D.

Mission

At S.A.N.D. School, our vision is to create an educational environment that is child-centered and supported by the entire school community who will work collaboratively to ensure that all students develop both academically and socially to their potential in order to create their own success in and beyond school.

School Expectations

Our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) School-Wide Expectations of S.O.A.R. are practiced amongst all S.A.N.D. students, faculty, staff, parents, and guests. Students are recognized daily for demonstrating our core values through earning Eagle Dollars. Students who earn Eagle Dollars can visit our Exchange Post to purchase school supplies, uniforms, agendas, and other assorted items.
Monthly and weekly PBIS school assemblies celebrate student successes and provide opportunities to reinforce school expectations. S.A.N.D. encourages each individual to shine through acts of Safety, Ownership, Achievement, and Respect.
Teachers meet weekly to review programs and data which help address areas of concerns before they become problems. Twice a month, the Safe School Climate Team meets to review practices, implement programs, and monitor the fidelity of our PBIS program. PBIS is a proactive, positive, and preventative process which is very effective in creating a safe school climate.

Curriculum

S.A.N.D. School students engage in their Common Core aligned, language arts curriculum using Literacy by Design or Expert 21. In Grades K-5, teachers and students use Literacy by Design, a balanced literacy curriculum that is built on the gradual release of responsibility model with explicit whole group instruction followed by differentiated small group instruction. Grade 6-8 students use Expert 21, an English Language Arts curriculum that focuses on inquiry-based learning through interdisciplinary literature and informational text and real-world application of reading and writing. Literacy by Design and Expert 21 provide a highly organized classroom structure where students apply concepts and skills from whole group instruction in small groups or independently within differentiated learning centers. Learning centers may include a poetry center, a listening center, a writing center, a fluency center, a phonics center, or a drama center to provide students with depth of understanding of the piece of literature or the theme in their unit of study. Waterford, SuccessMaker, iReady, and Read 180 are technology based literacy intervention programs that are used at S.A.N.D to assist students who are currently not meeting grade-level expectations to close the achievement gap. Numeracy core instruction is implemented through the use of enVisions whole group and small group differentiated math stations. Students are provided with daily problem-based interactive mathematics that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Waterford Math, iReady, Fastt Math, and enVisions Online are some of the math technology components used to support the curriculum. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, is built into the school community and instructional system to ensure that all students are engaged in a productive learning environment.
